Police sergeant,39, arrested for beating his girlfriend

A 39-year-old police Sergeant was arrested on Tuesday morning in connection with a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The Sergeant allegedly assaulted his girlfriend on Sunday, March 31, 2024, along the Mthoko Mkhize Main Road.

The suspect, employed at Mpumalanga police station in Hammersdale, was scheduled to appear in the Hammersdale Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, April 4, 2024.

Investigations are also underway regarding the victim’s claim of initially being denied the opportunity to file a case.

If these allegations prove valid, internal procedures will be initiated, and responsible officers will face appropriate disciplinary actions.

The South African Police Service prioritizes Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases, and frontline officers are expected to adhere to the Domestic Violence Act and respond appropriately.

Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi stressed the importance of police officers setting an example and being proactive in combating violence against women and children.

He affirmed that any officer found guilty of a crime will be arrested and held accountable under the law.
