Onthatile Makgale’s dreams of civil engineering dashed
Onthatile Makgale, a determined student from Vaal Reefs Technical High School, had her heart set on studying civil engineering.
Despite working diligently to pass the necessary subjects for university admission, the teenager faced disappointment as she failed her grade 12 exams.
The blow was even more significant as she struggled in Mathematics and Physical Science, the key subjects required for her desired course.
Overwhelmed by the weight of her perceived failure, Onthatile Makgale took the tragic step of ending her own life.
The news has left her family in Klerksdorp in shock, grappling with the pain of losing a promising young life.
The family told ZiMoja that they were still trying to come to terms with her death.
What adds to the family’s anguish is the fact that Onthatile did not share her internal struggles with anyone.
She chose not to speak to anyone or leave behind a note explaining the cause of her emotional turmoil.
The silence surrounding her pain has left her loved ones with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss.
“She wanted to wait for the newspaper like any other grade 12 learners.”
“I think she was hurting that her friend passed and she failed.”
“I know she studied hard hoping to pass,” Khomotso (Onthatile’s older sister) said.
The family found her hanging from a tree at the back of the house.
This is painful, and it is hard to believe that I will never see her again. I will never be able to take her out and have lunch with her on payday.”
“I regret going to work on Friday instead of accompanying her to school to collect her statement.”
” I so wish I was with her to tell her that everything is going to be fine and that she can take fix those marks.”
“My mother is hurt because she had a soft spot for her,” Khomotso would also say
North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed the incident.
“We can confirm that an inquest docket for investigation after a girl allegedly hanged herself on a tree in Orkney on Friday, 19 January.”
