Nine perish in deadly festive season crashes

Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security, and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, has issued a warning to motorists to exercise caution on the roads following two car crashes that claimed the lives of nine people over the weekend.

The SowetanLive reports that the first accident occurred on the N4 highway near Vosman and involved a sedan and an SUV, resulting in the deaths of both drivers and one passenger.

The second crash took place on the R38 road between Barberton and Manzana, where a minibus carrying six passengers overturned and rolled down a mountain, leading to the fatalities.

Shongwe highlighted that most deadly car crashes tend to occur at night or during the early morning hours, and fatigue often plays a significant role.

He urged motorists to rest adequately when embarking on long journeys to prevent exhaustion-related accidents.

How motorist can avoid crashes

Fatigue impairs judgment, slows reaction time, and increases the likelihood of falling asleep at the wheel.

Taking regular breaks, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep before a long trip are essential measures to combat fatigue.

In addition to fatigue, other factors such as speeding, distracted driving, and reckless behavior contribute to road accidents.

It is crucial for drivers to prioritize road safety by adhering to speed limits, avoiding distractions like mobile phones, and obeying traffic rules. By doing so, they can minimize the risk of accidents and protect themselves and others on the road.

Furthermore, the importance of regular vehicle maintenance cannot be overstated. Ensuring that brakes, tires, lights, and other essential components are in good working condition can prevent mechanical failures that may lead to accidents.

Regular servicing and inspections should be part of every driver’s routine.

The tragic accidents that occurred over the weekend serve as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety.
