Mpumalanga police commissioner in hot water. See what she allegedly did

Lieutenant General Daphney Manamela, Mpumalanga’s top cop, finds herself embroiled in controversy after being slapped with a suspension notice by National Police Commissioner General Fanie Masemola.

This follows allegations of misconduct, including threats of violence and financial impropriety.

Sunday World reports that Manamela faces seven charges, stemming from an initial charge sheet filed in October 2022.

These include authorizing the unauthorized installation of CCTV cameras in her office for R92,035.21, using vulgar language towards colleagues, and allegedly stating, “I want to assure you, the day I go down as PC (provincial commissioner) of Mpumalanga, there will be bloodshed in Mpumalanga.”

Further allegations suggest Manamela attempted to extort a gift from a colleague, demanding a pair of designer shoes and cancelling the colleague’s transfer when the request was not fulfilled.

She is also accused of misusing a state vehicle for unauthorized personal trips.

Despite receiving a five-day notice to provide reasons against her suspension, Manamela remained on duty, even attending an election readiness meeting.

However, sources close to Manamela claim she is being targeted for her crackdown on criminal cartels operating in Mpumalanga.

One source labeled the charges as “stupid and childish”, questioning the validity of accusations like the misuse of her assigned escort team.

Another source alleges that Manamela’s refusal to bow to pressure and arrest Mpumalanga local government MEC, Mandla Msibi, on allegedly fabricated charges, has made her a target.

The situation remains tense as the board of inquiry prepares to convene, leaving Manamela’s future hanging in the balance.
