8 Workers thrown to their death in a freak accident in Limpopo
The R555 in Steelpoort has reopened to traffic after being closed for over eight hours today, April 18, following an accident involving a Nnyana Shakwana bus and an SB Trading truck.
The bus was transporting miners from Mototolo Mine, and the truck was heading towards Kutullo with commuters in the back. According to South African Police Service (SAPS) members, when the vehicles collided, passengers in the back of the truck fell out. Some sustained injuries, while others were killed.
“According to reports, the bus sideswiped the truck,” said Tidimalo Chuene, the Limpopo Department of Transport’s spokesperson.
All the deceased were passengers on the back of the truck, headed to work at a nearby brick manufacturing company. Two additional people sustained serious injuries, while six others suffered minor injuries. All the injured were quickly transported to the nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The Limpopo MEC for transport and community safety, Florence Radzilani, said she is saddened by the loss of eight lives due to the accident.
She sent messages of condolences to the victims’ families. She also made a call to motorists to drive with caution and observe traffic rules at all times.
