Lightning struck and killed a woman with a baby on her back

Tragedy struck in Olievenhoutbosch, Pretoria, as a woman was struck by lightning and tragically lost her life on the evening of March 2nd around 6 pm in Extension 26.

Reports indicate that parts of Gauteng have been experiencing heavy rainfall recently.

According to accounts, the woman was carrying a child on her back during the incident. Thankfully, the toddler survived the ordeal.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the woman is a Zimbabwean national.

This marks the second lightning incident in Olievenhoutbosch and the third in Pretoria this year alone. The community is understandably shaken by these events and living in fear whenever rainfall occurs.

Lighting Safety Tips

Position with your head tucked and hands over your ears so that you are down low with minimal contact with the ground.

Never shelter under an isolated tree. If you are in a forest, shelter near lower trees.

Never use a cliff or rocky overhang for shelter.

Avoid any contact with water.

Stay away from objects that conduct electricity or electronic appliances.

If you are in a group during a thunderstorm, separate from each other. This will reduce the number of injuries if lightning strikes the ground

During a thunderstorm, avoid open vehicles such as convertibles, motorcycles, and golf carts.

Avoid open structures.

Stay away from open spaces such as golf courses, parks, playgrounds,  lakes, swimming pools, and beaches. Seek shelter immediately.

Stay away from tall structures
