I won’t be watching Sona but will be applying for job opportunities overseas – Some Saffas vow not to watch Sona

As President Cyril Ramaphosa prepares to deliver his State of the Nation Address (Sona), some South Africans are already expressing their disinterest in the event.

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) urged citizens to “switch off” and not watch the address, citing the lack of authenticity and political agendas behind the message.

Outa CEO Wayne Duvenage stated, “Sometimes it is necessary to visibly disengage with government in a manner of protest.”

Many South Africans echoed this sentiment, feeling that Sona had become a platform for political posturing and empty rhetoric.

Tswelopele Makgale from Alberton expressed her frustration, stating, “The country is faced with so many challenges and the government continues to fail its citizens. What is the plan regarding these issues, or will it be the same old promises?”

Makgale highlighted unemployment and access to higher education as key issues that she wanted the government to address.

Load shedding, a frequent occurrence in South Africa, also contributed to the disinterest in Sona.

Makgale emphasized that it was difficult to watch and listen to the address while dealing with power outages.

Instead, she planned to focus on her studies and finishing her master’s dissertation, aiming to improve her qualifications and eventually leave the country.

Thando Xamsane from Katlehong shared a similar sentiment, stating that there was nothing new to expect from Sona.

Xamsane believed that the president did not even want to be in his position and anticipated a long list of empty promises and threats if citizens did not vote for the ANC.
