WATCH| ANC members beat people in front of the police

People took to the street to protest against the ANC a few days after an increase in power rates of 18.65%  was approved by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa), and will take effect on April 1 of this year.

This will see most people buying one unit of electricity for almost R4.

According to News24 Eskom requested a 32% rate rise over the April 2023–April 2024 period.

The cash-strapped power utility has requested a second 22.52% hike for 2024–2025 in the same tariff application. Eskom has been given a 12.74% rate hike by Nersa.

According to the regulator, a “very tough choice” was made to balance the demands of consumers and Eskom.

Eskom was driven to conduct Stage 6 load shedding continuously this week as a result of increased diesel prices. In the fiscal year 2021/22, the utility spent R15 billion on diesel, which is around R9 billion more than Nersa would have permitted it to recoup through power pricing.

A loss of R12.3 billion for the fiscal year that ended in March 2022 was recently disclosed by Eskom.

South Africans protested in the streets of Johannesburg by blocking the highways with burning tires and rocks due to the ongoing rolling of blackouts that leave people 10 hours per day without electricity and the recent electricity price hike.

When protesters brought the match to the Luthuli house things took a dramatic turn and chaos erupted. The protesters were beaten with sticks and forcibly removed by alleged members of the ANC from a bakkie that they were traveling in.

The most troubling part of this incident is that nothing was done to stop the protesters from being assaulted while everything was happening right in front of law enforcement.
