Two women robbed while training for upcoming Two Oceans Marathon

Athletes preparing for the upcoming Two Oceans marathon in Cape Town have been urged to exercise caution following a distressing incident in which two women were mugged while training in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay.

The Daily Voice reports that the victims, who had been gearing up for the 56-kilometer ultramarathon and 21-kilometer half-marathon, were targeted by three assailants who made off with their belongings.

The Fish Hoek Athletics Club (FHAC) chairman expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the importance of personal safety while training.

He stated, “One of them had her backpack and cellphone stolen during the incident, but both ladies fortunately escaped the harrowing incident without injury.”

The chairman highlighted the club’s commitment to assessing training routes to avoid crime hotspots and enhance security measures for entrants.

In response to the incident, the Atlantic Athletic Club chairman, Mike Russell, acknowledged similar security challenges faced by athletes during training sessions.

The safety and well-being of athletes have become a top priority, prompting clubs to reevaluate training routes and implement additional security measures to mitigate risks and ensure the protection of their members.

The unfortunate mugging serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers athletes may encounter while training in public spaces.

As athletes continue their preparations for the Two Oceans marathon, vigilance and awareness of personal safety remain paramount.
