The invincibles? Sundowns make 11 changes but still win and remain unbeaten

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena hailed his players determination after they snatched a dramatic late winner against Richards Bay in the DStv Premiership on Tuesday night. Mokoena had gambled by making 11 changes to the starting lineup.

Junior Mendieta’s towering header in injury time secured a crucial victory for the Brazilians, maintaining their lead at the top of the table with 49 points from 19 games.

Mokwena was euphoric after the match, praising his team’s resilience and ability to grind out a result.

“I’m proud of the players. We needed to win, and we did,” Mokwena exclaimed to the media. “The number of rotations with players who haven’t played in a long time was challenging, but their attitude, energy, and spirit were fantastic.

Mokwena highlighted Mendieta’s perseverance and dedication, which paid off with the decisive goal. “I’m happy for Mendieta. The adaptation has been difficult for him, but he fights, trains well, and has a good attitude.”

While acknowledging areas for improvement, Mokwena expressed confidence that Sundowns can reach even greater heights with more training sessions. “We will improve, this team will get a lot better,” he said. “The only thing to improve is to train.”

Sundowns now turn their attention to the CAF Champions League quarter-final second leg against Young Africans on Friday. A win will earn them a spot in the semifinals, continuing their quest for continental glory.
