Sello Maake kaNcube’s joy is short lived as Blade Nzimande reveals doctorate is from a bogus university
Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande has raised concerns about the legitimacy of Trinity International Bible University, which recently conferred an honorary doctorate upon actor Sello Maake kaNcube.
According to Nzimande, the university is not registered and therefore lacks the authority to offer any qualifications.
In response to the honorary doctorate, Maake kaNcube took to social media to express his gratitude and excitement.
He posted pictures celebrating the achievement and wrote, “Look at God! It’s now Dr Sello Maake kaNcube Someone please tell my co-pilot Pearl Mbewe Maake KaNcube that she is no longer travelling this life journey with a national treasure only but with an honourable DR!”
However, the legitimacy of the honorary doctorate came under scrutiny from social media users, prompting Minister Nzimande to address the issue.
He stated, “According to our records as the Department of Higher Education and Training, Trinity International Bible University is not a registered private higher education institution. Trinity International Bible University is therefore not authorized to offer any qualifications, including honorary degrees.”
Department spokesperson Veli Mbele further emphasized the department’s stance, stating, “We have written to Trinity International University before and warned them about continuing to operate illegally and for them to regularize their operations.”
Mbele also mentioned that the Department has sought guidance from the Council on Higher Education (CHE) on how honorary qualifications should be offered and by whom.
