Ribeiro is open to play for Bafana

Mamelodi Sundowns player Lucas Ribeiro Costa has said he would be honoured to play for Bafana Bafana. Costa, 26, is not yet capped by Brazil, his home country, but has become a key figure in South African football since joining from SK Beveren.

Although he could only switch his international allegiance in 2028, there has been some speculation about whether he would consider playing for South Africa.

His former teammate Gaston Sirino received South African citizenship and is now eligible for selection, though his inclusion has been met with mixed reactions from fans.

“Unfortunately, at the moment, I haven’t received any call, offer, or request to play for Bafana Bafana,” Costa said. “But it would be a pleasure to represent South Africa because I am playing here, and the national team is doing well.”

“The national team is the highest level any footballer can reach in their career, and since there are many players from Sundowns in Bafana Bafana, it would be great if that opportunity came my way.”

“I believe I can adapt and help the national team because I’m one of the top-level players. But, unfortunately, that request or offer hasn’t come yet. If it does, I would respond more positively than negatively.”

Since joining Sundowns in July 2023, Costa has scored 22 goals and provided 13 assists in 48 matches.
