Hoedspruit Police officer kills SANDF member over shared girlfriend

The police are currently looking into a tragic incident where one of their own shot and killed a soldier at the entrance of the Hoedspruit police station in Limpopo earlier on the morning of January 26.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) arrested the 37-year-old policeman on Friday, following a confrontation that escalated to multiple shots being fired at the soldier.

According to the police watchdog, the sergeant had a quarrel with a 33-year-old member of the SA National Defense Force (SANDF) at Kinimambo tavern.

According to News24 the argument between the two individuals was about a shared girlfriend.

The SANDF member went to Hoedspruit Police Station to report a case but was told to come back later as he was drunk.

The sergeant went to the police station at around 02:30 and came across the SANDF member outside the police station and allegedly fired several shots and the SANDF member was fatally wounded. Paramedics declared him dead on scene.

The case was reported to IPID, which arrested the police officer. He will appear in the Hoedspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing a murder charge.

The SANDF confirmed the “sudden passing” of one of its Air Force members who was based in Hoedspruit.
