Murder of A Hawks Detective Leads to Manhunt
A manhunt is underway as police investigate the tragic killing of Hawks detective Lieutenant-Colonel Sikheto Mawila.
His lifeless body was discovered in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, with two gunshot wounds and three stab wounds, according to Eyewitness News.
Mawila, part of a team addressing Truth and Reconciliation cases under President Cyril Ramaphosa, was reported missing by his family after he failed to reach Durban, where he is based, over the weekend.
It was said that the 63-year-old was travelling alone in his personal vehicle.
The Hawks, South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, are leading a multi-disciplinary team to uncover the perpetrators behind this heinous crime.
What happened to the Hawks Lieutenant?
Hawks spokesperson, Philani Nkwalase:
“The family became concerned an hour later when they were unable to reach him on both his private and official cell phones.”
Nkwalase said that a passer-by stumbled upon a body in an open field in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, on Monday.
“On arrival at the scene, police found the body of an African male, which sustained head injuries, two gunshot wounds and three stab wounds.
“The deceased was positively identified as Lieutenant-Colonel Sikheto Mawila by members of his family.”
