Khanyisa Mayo explains why he couldn’t join Kaizer Chiefs
Khanyisa Mayo, the 26-year-old striker for CR Belouizdad and Bafana Bafana, has explained why he didn’t end up joining Kaizer Chiefs despite a big offer from the club.
Mayo, who previously played for Cape Town City, moved to the Algerian side before the start of the current season, but was heavily linked with a move to Chiefs beforehand.
In an interview with Michael Morton on SoccerBeat, Mayo said, “Yes, there was a good chance of that happening.”
He went on to explain, “What happened is that when I had just a contract with CR Belouizdad, that’s when Chiefs came knocking and they said they were willing to take out this amount of money for me.”
Mayo revealed that Chiefs’ offer came just an hour after he had finalised his move to Algeria. His agent, Basia Michaels, also confirmed in August that Chiefs were interested in Mayo but were too late to outbid CR Belouizdad.
So far, Mayo has played six matches in Algeria but has not scored any goals.
Mayo Reflects on the Move to Algeria
Talking about his new life in Algeria, Mayo admitted it was hard to adjust, but said he was determined to make it work.
“You make things work because you have to live as a soccer player, it’s our job to provide for our families you know. It’s a big step for every individual who makes it out of the country, it’s not easy but we have to make it work.”
Mayo also highlighted the uncertainty of a football career, saying, “Football is a short-term career man, you don’t know what might happen tomorrow.
You get a long-lasting injury so you have to use every opportunity you get.”
If his time in Algeria doesn’t go as planned, Kaizer Chiefs could try to sign Mayo next season.
