Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns caught up in a dilemma
Despite Stellenbosch FC’s efforts to retain left-back Fawaaz Basadien amid interest from Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, a recent development has revealed a potential loophole that could pave the way for the player’s departure.
The media has learned that a clause in Basadien’s new contract with Stellenbosch FC allows for his sale to either Chiefs or Sundowns if an acceptable offer is presented.
Last year, both Chiefs and Sundowns had expressed interest in acquiring Basadien’s services, prompting Stellenbosch FC to exercise an option in his contract, extending his stay at the club until June 2026.
However, the emergence of a clause stipulating the possibility of a transfer to the highest bidder from either of the Gauteng-based clubs has added a layer of uncertainty to Basadien’s future at Stellenbosch FC.
Reports suggest that Stellenbosch FC would entertain offers upwards of R10 million for Basadien, a valuation consistent with the club’s strategic approach to player transfers.
Notably, the club has demonstrated shrewd business acumen in previous deals, demanding R20 million for Jayden Adams and securing substantial fees for other key players like Ashley Du Preez and Junior Mendieta.
As the transfer saga unfolds, all eyes are on Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns to see if they will make a concrete offer that meets Stellenbosch FC’s valuation for Basadien.
The potential departure of the talented left-back could mark a significant transfer move for both clubs, as they seek to bolster their squads ahead of the upcoming season.
With the transfer window open, the next steps taken by Chiefs and Sundowns will determine Basadien’s future and whether he will make a move to one of the Gauteng giants.
