Refilwe Mofokeng: Rape Culture and it’s Effects on The Youth
South Africans were left in shock at the news of the alleged r*pe of 15 year old Refilwe Mofokeng at the hands of 3 other teenage boys, all of whom were minors.
Taking place in Midrand, Johannesburg. Mofokeng was lured from a braai at a clubhouse to another location by a mutual friend, where the alleged gang rape took place.
“On Wednesday, Gauteng police confirmed the three minors accused of the alleged rape of Refilwe Mofokeng are in custody. Details about the trio’s first court appearance have yet to be canvassed” as noted by SWISHERPOST
Making things worse for the victim, the suspects responsible had allegedly started harassing her online.
A private conversation on WhatsApp got leaked, where the suspects go in detail about what had occured.
The culprits thought Mofokeng wouldn’t remember what happened because she was unconscious.
In a video trending online Mofokeng’s sisters can be seen having a heated argument with the dad of one of the boys.
It ended up getting physical, and they accused the dad of assaulting them.
How Refilwe is currently doing
Mofokeng was able to receive medical attention and is now safe with her family.
The situation with Refilwe Mofokeng isn’t unique in South Africa, where rape and gender-based violence are still common.
Recent numbers show a worrying level of sexual crimes, especially affecting young victims.
