President Cyril Ramaphosa says government will compensate and help bury George building collapse victims including illegal immigrants

President Cyril Ramaphosa announces compensation for victims of the George Building collapse.

In a recent statement, following a visit to the site, President Cyril Ramaphosa assured that victims of the building collapse in George will receive compensation.

The government is commtitted to supporting the families affected by this disaster, promising both financial assistance and logistical support. In addition to burial assistance, the government will also provide medical support to those injured in the collapse.

According to reports about 500 t of rubble remain on site, as rescuers near day ten of rescue and recovery efforts.

The municipality points out that the site had been divided into six sections for the purposes of the rescue operation. Two of the six sections have not yet been fully cleared down to the basement level and this work continues.

Of the 81 people on site when the building collapsed on the afternoon of May 6, 19 are still unaccounted for, 12 are in hospital and 33 have died.

Among the dead are illegal immigrant workers who will be repatriated to countries including Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Lesotho.
