IEC Challenges Jacob Zuma to Provide Evidence for Bias Claims
Former President Accuses Electoral Commission of Favoring ANC; IEC Demands Proof
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has issued a challenge to former South African President Jacob Zuma, urging him to provide concrete evidence to support his allegations of bias against the commission.
The call came during a media briefing held on Wednesday as the country prepares for the second upcoming voter registration weekend.
Zuma, who is actively involved in the campaign for the newly-formed MK Party, recently accused the IEC of showing favoritism toward the African National Congress (ANC).
In addition to the bias claims, he asserted that certain IEC officials could be influenced through bribery to circumvent the commission’s established systems.
The IEC respond
Janet Love, a representative of the IEC, addressed Zuma’s allegations during the briefing, expressing the commission’s disappointment in the absence of substantiated evidence.
Love stated:
“It is entirely irresponsible as a citizen to try and undermine a process rather than to enable it.”
“This kind of talk that attempts to really inject into our country almost an insurrectionist mood is unacceptable and undemocratic.”
The IEC highlighted its commitment to conducting free and fair elections and highlighted the importance of ensuring public confidence in the electoral process.
Love encouraged responsible and constructive engagement in political discourse, stressing the significance of preserving democratic values.
As South Africa approaches the voter registration weekend, the IEC seeks to uphold the integrity of the electoral system and address any concerns raised by political actors, provided they are substantiated with evidence.
