Moroka Swallows in Crisis: 22 Players Fired Amid Salary Protest
Moroka Swallows, is facing a crisis as they have reportedly let go of 22 players, including Orlando Pirates’ star Bongani Sam.
This decision comes in the wake of a protest by the players in December 2023, leading the club to miss two Premier Soccer League (PSL) games.
In December 2023, the team failed to participate in two PSL fixtures against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows.
The players were protesting the non-payment of their salaries, which resulted in the club being penalized by the Premier Soccer League for not honoring their league games.
Now, Moroka Swallows has taken action by dismissing the players believed to be involved in the protest over unpaid salaries.
Orlando Pirates loanee Bongani Sam is among the headline names on the list.
iDiski Times published a list of the dismissed players, including Daniel Akpeyi, Thakasani Mbanjwa, and others.
Interestingly, some players known for their troublesome behavior, like Andile Jali, Gabadinho Mhango, and Dumisani Zuma, do not appear on the list.
Other players missing from the dismissal list are Tshegofatso Mabasa and Keenan Phillips, while Kagiso Malinga has joined Golden Arrows.
What’s next for Moroka Swallows
As Moroka Swallows navigates through this crisis, they have the opportunity to make changes during the January transfer window, which still has over 10 days remaining.
The big question remains whether coach Steve Komphela will continue leading the team amid the ongoing challenges.
With the PSL currently on a break, Moroka Swallows have some time to address the issues within the club before they resume competitive football on February 13 with a match against Cape Town City.
The next few weeks will be crucial as the team looks to rebuild and put their house in order during this challenging period.
