Former Bafana and Borussia Dortmund star banned from football

former Bafana Bafana star and current coach at UKZN, Delron Buckley, has been handed a ban for assaulting a match official during a recent game.

The incident took place during the 2024 USSA Football National Championships, where both the UKZN Head Coach and goalkeeper coach were charged with the assault.

Mandla Gagayi, Chairperson of the Disciplinary Committee at the championships, announced that both coaches have been given a five-year suspension from all USSA Football activities.

This suspension is not subject to appeal. The assault allegedly occurred after UKZN’s poor performance in a match that cost them the Varsity Cup championship.

Buckley, who hails from Durban, had a successful football career, particularly in Germany.

He was signed by VfL Bochum at the young age of 17 and went on to represent clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, FC Basel, and VFL Bochum during his time in Germany.
