Bail denied for police officer who raped his younger girlfriend

A police officer from the Northern Cape, who appeared in the Richmond District Court, has been remanded in custody. The 34-year-old constable, based in Richmond, faces charges of raping his 21-year-old girlfriend.

Police officer denied bail

Mojalefa Senokoatsane, the provincial spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), stated that the prosecution, with assistance from an Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) investigator, opposed bail due to the seriousness of the offense and the potential risk to the complainant’s safety if the accused were released.

The police officer, through his legal representative, argued that he would comply with all bail conditions, including monitoring by the South African Police Service (SAPS), to assure the court that he posed no danger to the complainant. However, the court rejected these submissions and denied bail
