Drug dealer found with drugs worth over R200 000 and illegal firearm granted bail

Desmond Pillay, 57, was recently granted R10,000 bail at the Durban Magistrate’s Court after being allegedly found with drugs, an unlicensed firearm, and ammunition in Clairwood last month.

Pillay’s arrest occurred on May 15 during a sting operation conducted by the Hawks from Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Crime Intelligence, and the Durban Metro Police.

Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, spokesperson for the Hawks, stated that the police had received information about an individual suspected of drug supply activities in the Clairwood area, which led to Pillay’s arrest.

“A coordinated operation was swiftly executed, with surveillance being conducted in the area. The suspect’s vehicle was identified and intercepted, leading to a search that uncovered various narcotics with an approximate street value of R215 155,” said Mhlongo.

Following his arrest for drug trafficking, Pillay’s vehicle, allegedly used for transporting drugs, and his firearm were confiscated. Mhlongo further said, “The firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine its potential involvement in any criminal activities within the country.”

Desmond Pillay, 57, made his initial appearance at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on May 22 and was remanded into custody. His bail application hearing was adjourned to May 23, where he was granted R10,000 bail.

Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona, the KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, praised the arrest and commended the law enforcement officials for their commendable efforts.

The case was adjourned, and Pillay is expected to reappear in court soon.
