A Police sergeant amongst robbers killed in shootout with police
A police sergeant from KwaMashu police station was among three suspected armed robbers who were shot and killed in a gun confrontation with law enforcement on Sunday afternoon in Ntuzuma, Durban.
The shootout followed a store robbery in Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal, where at least six suspects, some dressed in police uniforms, held the shop owner and staff at gunpoint, stealing firearms, money, and other items.
After the robbery, police tracked down the suspects to a house in Lindelani. Upon their arrival, two of the suspects opened fire and were shot dead by police.
A police bulletproof vest, a raincoat, and a service firearm were found at the scene, along with a vehicle belonging to the sergeant. Later, the police received intelligence that led them to a nearby shack where the sergeant was hiding. When he fired on the police, he was fatally shot in the ensuing gunfight.
The incident has prompted a manhunt for the remaining suspects involved in the robbery. KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi emphasised the seriousness with which the police are addressing criminal activities within their ranks, stating that rogue officers would face severe consequences.
