Two suspects arrested after they gang raped a pensioner
Two suspects, ages 35 and 47, were arrested in Mmametlake and are scheduled to appear at the Mbimbana Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday, May 9, 2024, after allegedly raping a 68-year-old woman in Mmametlake.
The incident took place on the night of Monday, May 6, 2024, and has been strongly condemned by the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela.
Reports suggest the elderly woman was returning home from a nearby tuckshop when she encountered the two men waiting at her gate. Allegedly, they forcefully dragged her into nearby bushes despite her cries for help.
Further allegations state the two men took turns raping her. Members of the community intervened to help the victim, and she was taken to a local medical facility for treatment.
After being notified, the police opened a rape case for investigation, which led to the arrest of the two suspects. The Provincial Commissioner reassured the public that the police will conduct a thorough investigation into this grave crime.
“We assigned our investigators from the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit to investigate and in collaboration with the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), we are hoping for a conviction as well as harsher sentence for the perpetrators,” said the General.
