Exposed: Danny Jordaan’s R1.3 million SAFA mess

A public relations firm hired to manage the reputation of South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan has revealed the extensive efforts it made to shape a positive narrative amidst damaging allegations against him.

The Sowetan reports that Grit Communications detailed in a report to Safa how it worked to counter negative media coverage and position Jordaan as a central figure in rebuilding the organization’s image.

The company identified various allegations, including a rape accusation by former singer Jennifer Ferguson, political disputes with veteran administrator Irvin Khoza, and claims of a R10 million Fifa bribe for the 2010 World Cup, as part of a targeted attack to portray Jordaan as corrupt.

Despite no formal charges, Jordaan remained associated with the bribery allegations due to political agendas hindering him from presenting evidence to the contrary.

The report also highlighted Jordaan’s troubled term as mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay in 2016, which further damaged his reputation.

Grit Communications’ efforts to manage crises and enhance Safa’s image were acknowledged, with the company earning R1.3 million for its services over 16 months.

While Safa faces scrutiny from the Hawks for alleged corruption involving contracts with Grit Communications and Badger Security, the report emphasized the need for a more coordinated approach to mitigate future negative attacks.

Grit Communications aimed to generate positive media coverage, bolster local support for Safa, and expand its media influence during its tenure.

The recent raid by the Hawks at Safa’s offices underscores the ongoing legal challenges faced by the organization and Jordaan.
