Gqeberha family in spiritual nightmare after their dead son’s body was taken to Lesotho and they buried a wrong body

A Gqeberha father, Nkosinathi Betwell Marangula, is on a heartbreaking mission to retrieve the remains of his son, Mwezi Matshobongwana, after a grave mix-up by Eastern Cape health department staff led to his body being mistakenly sent to Lesotho.

The Herald reports that Marangula, who has been struggling to find closure since discovering the body-swap mistake, expressed his dismay and intention to take legal action against the department.

Marangula’s son, Mwezi Matshobongwana, and another individual, Lebo Tsephe, tragically lost their lives in separate incidents in Nelson Mandela Bay last year.

Due to a mix-up, their bodies were mistakenly swapped, with Tsephe intended for burial in Lesotho and Matshobongwana in Gqeberha.

The error has left Marangula devastated and seeking the return of his son’s body to its rightful resting place.

Health department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo initially expressed skepticism about the claims but has since acknowledged the department’s mistake and issued apologies to the affected families.

Marangula, however, remains distraught and determined to seek justice for the mishandling of his son’s remains.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Marangula lamented the confusion and emotional turmoil caused by the mix-up.

“My son’s final resting place should be here, close to home, where I can visit him whenever I want,” he expressed.

The devastating realization that the family had buried the wrong person has added to Marangula’s grief and disbelief, underscoring the profound impact of the department’s negligence.
