6 Suspects arrested following foiled Sandton robbery
Police foiled a potential robbery in Sandton on Sunday, 24 March 2024, by intercepting two vehicle which consisted of a courier company bakkie and a private Toyota bakkie, transporting six armed suspects.
The suspects were allegedly on their way to commit the crime and were arresref with two rifles and three pistols loaded with live ammunition.
Authorities received intelligence about the gang planning a robbery in Johannesburg, using a marked courier truck.
Johannesburg Flying Squad surveilled the area and identified two vehicles fitting the description traveling on the N1 South. They trailed the suspects until reaching the M1 South in Sandton, where they came to a stop.

Among the vehicles stopped was a branded Courier Company Ford bakkie driven by an employee and a white Toyota double cab bakkie.
Upon searching both vehicles, law enforcement discovered the army worth of weapons in the possession of the suspects.

The six people were immediately arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, along with conspiracy to commit robbery.

The firearms seized will undergo ballistic testing to ascertain any potential links to other criminal activities, while the suspects will undergo profiling to determine if they are wanted for any other offenses.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni commended the members of the Johannesburg Flying Squad for their efforts in stopping what could have been a dangerous robbery, potentially resulting in loss of life.
“I thank our members from Flying Squad who acted swiftly after receiving the information and intercepted the suspects before they could commit crime and possibly kill innocent people.
I also thank the law-abiding community of Gauteng, who continue to alert the police about criminal activities that are about to take place in our province. Working together, we will squeeze the space for the criminals in Gauteng,” said Lieutenant General Mthombeni.
