3 foreign nationals killed in a fire while at work in KZN
A fire broke out in a company in Missionlands, KZN, leaving three foreign nationals burned beyond recognition and others injured.
The charred remains of three Malawian nationals were recovered from a building that went up in smoke on Eagle Road. The incident is said to have occurred on Saturday.
Family and friends of four men, who failed to return home this morning, took it upon themselves to search for them at their workplace.
Their search led them to look through a window of the gutted building, where they made a grim discovery of what appeared to be skeletal remains.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) then received a call for assistance. Upon arrival, Reaction Officers and RUSA Paramedics confirmed that the discovery as human remains.
Ethekwini Fire & Rescue Services later arrived at the scene and located two additional bodies, with one person still missing.
According to relatives of the deceased, nine Malawian nationals were on the night shift at the furniture manufacturing business when the fire broke out around 23:30 the previous night.
Allegedly, all exits and entrances were locked by their employer at the start of their shift, trapping the men inside the building.While this information was provided by survivors, it has yet to be officially confirmed.
Fortunately, five employees managed to escape by jumping out of windows from the upper level of the building, with with minor injuries.
