Matric student goes on the run after raping fellow student
A shocking incident of alleged rape has rocked Dutywa, with a 21-year-old high school pupil arrested and another on the run following accusations from a fellow pupil at a private hostel over the weekend.
The victim, a matric girl, reported being raped on Saturday night, leading to the swift apprehension of one suspect who appeared in court yesterday.
Expressing outrage over the incident, the Department of Education has strongly condemned the alleged assault, emphasizing the need for justice and protection of learners.
The victim’s aunt detailed the harrowing ordeal, recounting how her niece was studying for an exam when the suspect lured her for drinks at a nearby tavern.
Upon their return, he allegedly raped her, then took her to his residence where another individual joined in the assault.
Despite the victim’s aunt reporting the incident to school teachers, she expressed frustration over the lack of immediate action, stating that the school officials indicated they would only intervene once the police had made an arrest.
The aunt’s concern over the handling of the situation highlights the urgent need for schools to address such matters promptly and effectively.
An anonymous teacher at the school acknowledged previous incidents in the hostels, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to ensure student safety.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed that a case had been opened, underlining the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating the matter.
