We beat you now Amapiano is ours: Nigerians claim ownership of Amapiano after defeating Bafana Bafana

Nigerians took to social media in a frenzy of celebration after their national football team defeated South Africa in the African Cup of Nations semifinal.

The victory sparked a heated debate on social media, with some Nigerians claiming that their win automatically granted them ownership of the Amapiano genre.

Amapiano has been traditionally associated with both countries.

However, in recent years, South Africa has emerged as a major player in the African music scene, with its own Amapiano version gaining popularity worldwide.

The ownership debate surrounding Amapiano has been ongoing for quite some time, but South Africans have been particularly defensive of their genre.

As one South African Twitter user expressed, “We have our own unique sound, and we don’t need to claim ownership of Amapiano just because we lost a football match.”

On the other hand, many Nigerians believe that their victory over South Africa in the AFCON semifinal solidifies their claim to the Amapiano genre.

One Nigerian tweet read, “We beat South Africa, so now we own Amapiano! It’s our birthright!”
