Two suspects killed in shootout with the Hawks in Brackendowns, Johannesburg

Two suspects were fatally shot during a confrontation with the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS) this afternoon in Brackendowns, south of Johannesburg.

The multi-disciplinary team, consisting of TOMS, SAPS Crime Intelligence, Gauteng Tactical Response Team, Anti-Gang Unit, DPC Tracking Team 2, Public Emergency Services, Gauteng Traffic’s Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations, and Tracker Connect, acted on received intelligence. As the identified suspect vehicle approached the R59, the suspects realized they were being tactically approached by law enforcement and opened fire. Police returned fire, fatally wounding both suspects, whose vehicle was fitted with false registration plates. Despite their injuries, the suspects attempted to flee but crashed into a ditch.

Authorities recovered two unlicensed firearms—a rifle and a handgun—along with ammunition, cellphones, and gloves from the scene. An investigation is underway to determine if the suspects were linked to other armed robberies in the Johannesburg area.
