Two men called to assist drowning person ignored the pleas for help and instead allegedly tried to steal items from the house

Disaster struck a Kariega home over the weekend as a man lost his life in a drowning incident, while two men chose to prioritize theft over lending a helping hand.

His mother attempted to pull him from the water using a pool net, but, failing to do so, she ran out of the property and called two unknown males in the street to assist her.

The men then allegedly attempted to steal from the house but were chased away.

The heartbreaking turn of events unfolded as 72-year-old mother of the deceased, Tamsanqa Sham Maboeta, desperately attempted to rescue her son from the clutches of the water in their swimming pool.

In a shocking display of apathy and greed, two men passing by the house ignored the mother’s pleas for assistance and instead allegedly sought to steal valuables from the house.

The distressed mother’s cries for help fell on deaf ears as the heartless duo reportedly prioritized theft over a fellow human being’s life.

Thankfully, a ray of hope emerged in the form of a compassionate next-door neighbour who rushed to aid the grieving mother.

Together, they managed to retrieve Maboeta from the water; however, their efforts proved futile as he was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Providing details of the harrowing incident, Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge revealed that the drowning occurred on Friday around 12:50 pm.

“By the time he pulled the son out of the water, the [medics] had arrived and shortly thereafter declared him dead,” he said.
