Two arrested for Bityi mass shooting
Police in the Eastern Cape have confirmed the arrest of two suspects linked to a mass shooting in Bityi, near Mthatha, where five people were killed.
The incident occurred on Friday, October 18, shortly after 8:30 PM, when two gunmen entered a yard and opened fire.
Among the deceased were a husband and wife sleeping in a rondavel, along with a man and two women.
Two children were injured and taken to a medical facility for treatment.
The assailants also shot at individuals in another house, resulting in three fatalities and additional injuries.
Two children who survived the attack managed to flee and alerted neighbours, who subsequently contacted the police.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa reported that the suspects, aged 22 and 39, were arrested on Tuesday at Msukweni Location in the Bityi area.
During the investigation, police recovered an unlicensed Norinco firearm and ammunition.
The suspects face five counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, armed robbery, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
They are set to appear in the Bityi Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, October 24, 2024.
Eastern Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene praised the investigating team for their swift action in this case, highlighting ongoing concerns about mass shootings in the region.
“This sends a stern warning to the perpetrators that police will not rest until those responsible for any crime face the full might of the law,” Mene stated.
