In addition to naming trends, Stats SA reports some key insights into birth rates in South Africa.
Most births occur in January, March, and May, and teenage pregnancies remain a significant concern, with over 45,000 expected in 2024. Of the half a million babies expected to be born this year, nearly 490,000 will be boys.
Births are concentrated in the more populous provinces, with Gauteng accounting for 22% and KwaZulu-Natal for 20%, while the Northern Cape and Free State have the lowest birth rates at 3% and 5%, respectively.
