3 suspects arrested following high speed chase and shootout

On 1 April 2024, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit arrested three suspects in Roodepoort following a high-speed pursuit and exchange of gunfire.

Acting on information regarding a silver Hyundai i10 associated with car thefts and burglaries in Turffontein, officers pursued the vehicle, leading to a confrontation where the men fired at the police.This resulted in a collision and the subsequent arrest of the suspects.

They were discovered in possession of a 38 special revolver and tools for theft. The trio faces charges including attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm, and they were detained at Roodepoort South African Police Service (SAPS).

One injured suspect is currently under hospital supervision, while their vehicle has been seized by authorities.

In a seperate incident, police from different units and private security officers fatally shot five alleged Cash In Transit robbers following a shootout in Mpumalanga, Tasbet Park suburb in Witbank before midday, 3 April 2024.

When the suspects saw the police and they started shooting. The police and private security officers retaliated and five suspects were declared dead on the scene, eight others were arrested while about nine managed to flee the scene.
