Six suspects killed in shootout with KZN police

In the early hours of  Thursday, 16 May 2024, six suspects were shot and killed in two separate incidents in KwaZulu-Natal where they opened fire on police officers. Five firearms were recovered during these confrontations.

Suspects killed in shootout

In the first incident, four men suspected of being behind a series of cash-in-transit robberies were killed in an early morning shootout with police in Camperdown.

Police officers from various units, including the Hawks, had gathered intelligence on the suspects’ whereabouts. Upon announcing their presence at the identified house, the suspects greeted the officers with a hail of bullets. The police returned fire, resulting in fatal gunshot wounds to the four suspects. Three firearms were recovered from the scene.

In another incident, members of the National Intervention Unit, acting on intelligence, cornered two suspects wanted for intimidation, extortion, and other violent crimes.

When police confronted the suspects at their hideout in the Klaarwater Hostel in Mariannhill, the suspects opened fire. The police responded, fatally wounding both suspects. Two firearms were found in their possession.

KwaZulu-Natal police remain committed to enforcing and upholding the law by preventing, combating, and investigating crime. Suspects who challenge the authority of the state by shooting at police officers will be met with force proportional to their actions.
