Six suspects arrested for Electoral Act Violations in Mavundleni

Six suspects, aged between 24 and 51, were arrested in Mavundleni locality, Qhingqolo A/A on Tuesday, 28 May, and in the early hours of today, 29 May 2024, between 23:00 and 03:00. They face charges of contravening the Electoral Act.

The arrests stem from an incident on Sunday, 26 May 2024, around 16:00, when a voting station set up as a tent was destroyed by individuals protesting service delivery issues in the area. Following this, a case was opened, and on Monday, 27 May 2024, the same group threatened IEC officials, insisting the station be closed to prevent voting.

On Tuesday, 28 May 2024, the group further escalated their actions by blocking roads, burning tires, and preventing any movement in the area.

The OR Tambo District detective election team, assisted by Public Order Policing members, conducted an operation on Tuesday, 28 May 2024, resulting in the arrest of the six suspects. They are currently detained at Mqanduli police station and are scheduled to appear at the Mqanduli Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 01 June 2024.
