Press conference goes badly wrong for journalist after star puts him in awkward situation
French tennis star Gael Monfils found himself in an awkward situation during a press conference at the Monte-Carlo Masters when he was asked about his thoughts on Daniil Medvedev’s clay-court abilities.
Monfils had just been defeated by Medvedev in the second round of the tournament, setting up a match between Medvedev and Karen Khachanov.
Monfils, known for his success on clay and his impressive record at the French Open, was taken aback by the question.
In response, he turned the tables on the reporter, highlighting the absurdity of the question by questioning whether his own lack of a Masters Series title made him a bad clay-court player.
“Well, I don’t know if Gilles (Simon – coach) helped him a lot, but Daniil played well,” Monfils responded. “He didn’t make many mistakes. It’s a strange question, because he won a Masters Series. I never won any. Am I a bad clay-courter for that?”
The exchange shed light on the pressure and scrutiny that professional athletes face in the media, with questions often aimed at dissecting their abilities and performances.
Monfils’ clever response not only deflected the awkward question but also highlighted the arbitrary nature of labeling players based on specific criteria.
