Police officers shot and disarmed during robbery
General Fannie Masemola, the national commissioner of the South African Police Services (SAPS), has ordered Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, the provincial commissioner of Gauteng, to mobilise as many resources as possible. This is after three police officers were shot and stripped of their service pistols during an armed robbery at a gas station in Tembisa. The incident happened early on the morning of 8 September 2022.
Several armed suspects entered a petrol station on Andrew Mapheto Drive, according to reports from the scene. They stole cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of money from the store. The gang saw a squad of policemen enter the petrol station. This was just as they were ready to flee. They started shooting right away at the three police officers and a security guard.
Multiple gunshot wounds were inflicted on the three members and the security guard. They were also disarmed off their service guns.
One of the three police officers tragically passed away at the hospital.
The group of at least 15 suspects who sped away from the scene in a Toyota Quantum and a Toyota Corolla Prestige are being sought. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed what happened is invited to call the Crime Stop Hotline at 08600 10111. Reminding callers that they can stay anonymous.
