Planned prison delivery ends in tears

The Western Cape Provincial Extortion Task Team responded to intelligence about a shipment of narcotics and other things that were planned to be delivered to prisoners on Monday, 9 January 2023. Three hundred and eighty-five mandrax tablets, ten kilograms of dagga, five grams of cocaine, ten cellphones with batteries, and thirty-five sim cards were taken during a search of the mentioned premises in Bevan Street, Greenhaven, Manenberg, by the members of the police.

Information received indicated that the illegal substances were planned to be smuggled into Voorbrug . A 58-year-old woman was then detained on suspicion of drug trafficking.

The suspect will appear in court in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once she has been charged.

Our prison system serves as a place for rehabilitation where prisoners are given the chance to acknowledge their wrongdoings and prepare for reintegration into society once they are released from jail. It is not only intended for criminals to serve their prison sentences for the crimes they have committed.

Because of this, it is extremely disappointing when prisoners utilize prisons to operate drug rings as well as there are members of the public who are ready to support this criminal behaviour by assisting in the smuggling of drugs into jails.

It is obvious that inmates who continue to engage in criminal activity while incarcerated do not intend to be rehabilitated, and their sentences should be lengthened. Those who assist in drug smuggling should also receive punishment appropriate to the crime.
