Pirates wants to make new history

According to Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro, the Buccaneers want to make new history against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday rather than letting the past influence them.

Riveiro claims that he is not to blame for Sundowns’ six-game winning streak over Pirates. These games ended with scores of 4-1, 2-0, 3-0, and 4-1.

Before their MTN8 first leg semifinal, he stated that they are entirely focused on maximizing the potential of the talented team at their disposal. He also stated that regardless of the opponent, they must get as close as possible to the playing style and identity he wants to implement.

Pirates coach opinion on Sundowns

About Sundowns’ recent supremacy, Riveiro noted, “The past two seasons are not going to play on Saturday.”

“The past is the past, it is no longer relevant. Since this is a different story. We strive to look to the future with optimism and positivity. This season’s book is different, and we get the chance to create a brand-new history.

“We attempt to accomplish this in every game, and this one is certainly no exception. Sundowns or whoever is in front [of us] in the semi-final or two legs, we’re striving to be ourselves, develop, and grow our own identity.

“What we are trying to do is much more important than just one game, or isolating one game like something very, very special. If we manage to beat [Sundowns], and that’s what we’re hoping for, we’re going to have an outcome very, very positively.”

Riveiro continued by saying that the team is getting excited since they all share the same feelings of not having previously felt the glory associated with the Soweto giants.

The players are extremely hungry and anticipating the match, so we’re just looking forward to today, tomorrow, and the next, he said.

“They are professional, ambitious, and playing for the Pirates, therefore they play these kinds of games, especially when we play at home. This season, we can create our history.

Before the second leg in Tshwane two weeks later, Pirates will host the 2021/22 triple champions on Saturday afternoon at the Orlando Stadium (15h30).
