Orlando Pirates’ quest for African star takes a shocking twist

In the competition to sign one of the hottest attackers on the African continent, Orlando Pirates will face tough competition from clubs in Europe

Marou Souaibou, a striker from Cameroon, was believed to be signed by Orlando Pirates after sources from the West African nation said the transaction was finalised.

The 21-year-old was selected for Rigobert Song’s Indomitable Lions team, who is set to compete in the Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup. He didn’t participate in any of their three group-stage games, though.

In January, Souaibou was supposed to sign a contract worth $200 000 (R3.45 million) with the Orlando Pirates, according to the South African

“Weeks after kick442 stumbled and reported on a concrete offer from Orlando Pirates for the services of Marou Souaibou, three European giants have entered the race for the signature of the player who had started discussing personal terms with the Bucs.” the publication reported.

“According to our sources, Belgian Jupiler Pro League side Standard Liege, Armenia Bielefield of the German Bundesliga and French Ligue 1 side Clermont Foot FC have established contact with related parties to secure the signature of the Cotonsport skipper.”
