Ntshangase regrets turning down Pirates
Former Maritzburg United midfielder Phumlani Ntshangase has expressed regret over rejecting an opportunity to join Orlando Pirates a few years ago.
While playing for Wits, he ignored Pirates’ advances and chose to remain with his team.
In 2020, Wits was sold, leaving Ntshangase and many teammates scrambling for new clubs.
He reflects that if he had considered the Pirates’ offer, he might have avoided the upheaval caused by Wits’ sale.
Looking back, Ntshangase often wonders why he didn’t accept the Pirates offer.
He explained that at the time, he was invested in Wits’ ambitions and wanted to contribute to their success.
Now 29, Ntshangase has also played for SuperSport United, captained Maritzburg United, and featured for Baroka and Highbury FC.
He is currently without a team following his unexpected exit from Highbury FC in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
PSL midfielder Ntshangase regrets not joining Orlando Pirates, stating, “You know, sometimes I look back and always think that if I had made a move at that time, maybe things would have been different because there were some calls from other clubs, especially Orlando Pirates.”
He added, “Pirates, at that time, was a big call-up team that was more interested.
However, I chose to stay at Wits because I liked the structure, and the team had a big vision.
I think until today, I do regret it, but I don’t regret it 100% because, if you look at it, I’m very proud of myself for making it with one of the most overlooked teams in the league.”
He concluded, “You know, big teams are always expected to win all the cups like Pirates are doing now. But I was able to do that with just an average team back in the day.”
