Murder accused Corinne Jackson marries secretly in Cape Town as trial drags on

The murder trial of Corinne Jackson has taken an unexpected turn with the revelation that she secretly married her fiancé, Erin van den Berg, in September 2022.

The trial, which has been ongoing for seven years, has been marked by numerous delays and postponements.

Jackson is accused of murdering her estranged girlfriend, Nadine Estherhuizen, in 2017. She has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and assault, claiming that she acted in self-defense.

The state alleges that Jackson attempted to behead Estherhuizen and stabbed her over 20 times.

In 2023, Jackson was arrested for a third incident involving a male victim in Bo Kaap. She is also facing charges of contravening a protection order and assault from previous incidents.

During Friday’s hearing at the Mitchell’s Plain Regional Court, transcripts of the matter were requested for Jackson’s newly appointed lawyer. The case has been plagued by delays, with the state expressing its desire for no further postponements.

Prior to her marriage, Jackson had taken to social media to praise her fiancé, calling her “brave.” The couple’s wedding was reportedly a lavish event held at a wine farm.

The revelation of Jackson’s marriage raises questions about the impact it may have on the trial. It is unclear whether her new marital status will affect her defense or the presentation of evidence.
