Moroka Swallows Faces Setbacks as PSL Rejects Sponsorship Deals

Moroka Swallows chief, David Mogashoa, expresses dissatisfaction with the recent rejection of sponsorship, marking another setback for the PSL in declining a deal for the Dube Birds.

The rejection of the sponsorship deal with Goldrush by PSL attorney Michael Murphy has left Swallows in a financial predicament.

Goldrush is a company specializing in high-end online gaming entertainment, covering sports betting, live games, gold reels, bet games, skill games, promotions, and more.

Despite Murphy’s disapproval of Goldrush’s association with Moroka Swallows, Golden Arrows received approval to collaborate with a similar company, 10Bet.

Additionally, the PSL turned down Swallows’ arrangement with Telkom, as the telecommunications giant aimed to stream The Dube Birds’ non-televised games.

The PSL declined, preferring to maintain exclusivity for rights owners Multichoice and leasers SABC.

Swallows currently faces financial challenges, with players staging a strike due to non-payment before Christmas Day.

Consequently, the club had to request the cancellation of two matches against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows last week from the PSL.

What the Moroka Swallows chief had to say

“Michael Murphy stopped the deal and didn’t even go to Exco of the PSL.

“The league is protecting itself and apparently, they want to sign with a betting sponsorship, and they are not saying who.

“This declaration is to protect that sponsor, we don’t know who it is,” Mogashoa said, as per iDiski Times.

“But if you have a betting company that is sponsoring the club, that cannot stop another club from getting a similar sponsor.

“Swallows can have Cell C as a sponsor because Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are sponsored by Vodacom and Vodacom is not a league sponsor.”

“The conflict of interest is with the league, not with the clubs.

“If I were to get a Cell C sponsor, MTN [as they are also a telecommunication company] would still have to approve it because they are sponsoring the league [the MTN8].

“The PSL declined Telkom because Telkom wanted to stream Swallows games that were not live on TV,” Amaswaiswai boss added.
