Man arrested in connection with Joburg CBD fire which killed 76 people

Gauteng police have made an arrest in connection with the tragic fire that claimed 76 lives in the Usindiso building in Marshalltown, Johannesburg CBD, in August.

The arrest came after a man confessed to starting the blaze during his testimony at the Commission of Inquiry into the incident.

The 29-year-old suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday, according to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.

He is expected to appear before the Johannesburg court soon to face charges of arson, 76 counts of murder, and 120 counts of attempted murder.

The Commission of Inquiry, which had been on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions, resumed this week.

Its purpose is to investigate the cause of the fire and determine whether any negligence or wrongdoing contributed to the high death toll.

The arrest of the suspect is a significant development in the investigation.

It provides hope for the families of the victims that justice will be served and that those responsible for the tragedy will be held accountable.

The fire in the Usindiso building shocked the nation and highlighted the urgent need for improved safety measures in high-rise buildings.
