Love spurned man takes out frustration on ex-girlfriends niece
The murder of two-year-old Akanyang Maite has resulted in a life imprisonment sentence for his killer, Vincent Chunky Phahlane.
The incident took place on November 30, 2020, in Vaalbank, South Africa.
Phahlane, the ex-boyfriend of Akanyang’s aunt, went on a rampage after his ex-girlfriend refused to meet him.
He stole his father’s firearm and initially went to her workplace, a school in Vaalbank, where he fired random shots.
He then proceeded to his other ex-girlfriend’s residence, where he encountered Akanyang’s aunt.
During this encounter, Phahlane asked about his ex’s child and, in a moment of panic, shot and killed young Akanyang.
The aunt, in her state of shock, screamed, which led Phahlane to shoot her in the jaw. Fortunately, she survived the attack.
Phahlane fled the scene and handed the firearm to his uncle the following day before going into hiding.
However, his time as a fugitive didn’t last long.
After more than a month on the run, Phahlane turned himself in to the police in Vaalbank on January 7, 2021.
The Mpumalanga high court sitting in Middelburg heard the case and ultimately sentenced Phahlane to life imprisonment for his heinous crimes.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the importance of addressing the issue in our society.
The murder of an innocent child has left a community in shock and mourning, and it is crucial that we work towards preventing such acts of violence.
Police spokesperson Col Donald Mdhluli emphasized the severity of the crime, stating, “This is a heartbreaking case that highlights the need for stricter gun control measures and greater awareness of domestic violence. Our thoughts go out to the family of the victim, who have undoubtedly been through immeasurable pain and suffering.”
