In broad daylight, bodyguards for the mayor and manager of the City of uMhlathuze opened fire, forcing council members and other municipal officials to flee for their lives. Two people were killed in the exchange.

For the time being, the circumstances leading to the event are still unclear. On the other hand, long-term tensions had been building between the two bodyguards, according to individuals who talked with Sunday World.IFP mayor Xolani Ngwezi and municipal manager Nkosenye Zulu were linked to the two rivals.

On Thursday morning, the situation escalated when the two heavilarmed guards made the terrified officials flee for their Lives

“I think they had a beef of some sort because there were rumours within the corridors of the municipality that the two were sworn enemies. I had just arrived at the office when I heard screams and a loud bang. When we ran out, one bodyguard was lying on the ground heavily bleeding,” one official not authorised to speak to the media told Sunday World on Thursday.

“Early investigations point to the fact that an off-duty policeman shot and killed another bodyguard. The suspect was then also shot and killed by a third bodyguard, a colleague of the first victims

Netshiunda added that no arrests have been made and that the tragic incident’s motivation is yet unknown.

 

More information would be released by the municipality eventually, according to Bongani Gina, the spokesman for the municipality.
