Illegal immigrants arrested for murder and assault

On 30 August 2022, twelve illegal immigrants were arrested for assault with the purpose to do great bodily injury. Two of the suspected illegal miners were arrested for murder.

When police received word of a vigilante incident at Bhongweni in Randfontein, they were in the middle of a search for unlicensed miners. Police responded and saved two persons who were being attacked by ten people they believe to be illegal miners.

According to preliminary investigation, the two victims were charged with killing another miner in the early morning hours.

Police detained all twelve individuals, charged ten with assault with the intent to cause great bodily harm and two with murder.

The twelve suspects, who are reportedly illegal immigrants, will also be processed by agents from the Department of Home Affairs.

They are anticipated to appear at the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court as soon as possible.
